Professor De Souza was awarded the RWTH Chemistry Students’ Prize for excellent teaching. The award was presented at this year’s Day of Chemistry on 18th January by representatives of the chemistry students’ council.

The 10th Joint Korean-German Conference was held in Aachen in October 2018, organized by the Alumni Network Germany-Korea and RWTH Aachen University. The ADeKo Conference makes a significant contribution both to science and to building and developing German-Korean relations. 350 participants enjoyed plenty interesting talks in the topics Digital Production and Products – Industry 4.0, Smart Cities and Infrastructure, Future Mobility, Energy for our Future and Business Opportunities for German and Korean Companies.

Jana Parras won a prize at the „EMRS 2018“ in Strasbourg, France, for her poster presentation
titled „Is ReO3 a mixed ionic-electronic conductor? A DFT study of defect formation and migration in a B VIO3 perovskite-type oxide“.
The front cover of the journal Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics shows current research results from Dr. Julius Koettgen, Dr. Steffen Grieshammer, Philipp Hein and Prof. Dr. Manfred Martin. In the highlighted Perspective article “Understanding the ionic conductivity maximum in doped ceria: trapping and blocking” (DOI: 10.1039/C7CP08535D), ionic conductivity in doped ceria is systematically predicted. For this purpose, only a few migration energies from first-principles DFT calculations are combined with Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The resulting ionic conductivity is in agreement with experiments. The effect of dopants on migration barriers is separated in symmetric (blocking) and asymmetric influences (trapping). Blocking determines the dopant fraction where the ionic conductivity exhibits the maximum. Trapping limits the maximum ionic conductivity value.
Dr. Alexandra von der Heiden won a prize at the 21st International Conference on Solid State Ionics in Padua, Italy, for her poster presentation titled „Influence of structure and stoichiometry on oxygen diffusion and conductivity in gallium oxide thin films“.

Helmholtz Institute Münster Ionics in Energy Storage
The Helmholtz Institute Münster for Ionics in Energy Storage, IEK-12, was founded in July 2014. It is run as a branch office of Forschungszentrum Jülich together with the University of Münster, WWU, and RWTH Aachen University. IEK-12 is concerned with researching electrolytes as a key component for new battery concepts. The electrolyte is a central part of any battery and is crucial for making the use of renewable energy sources cheap and widely available, thus successfully transforming the German energy sector.
Dr. Roger A. De Souza has been appointed a Visiting Associate Professor at Stanford University in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Stanford University.
Durch Europäische Union gefördertes Verbundprojekt "Green-CC" bewilligt
Funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme Collaborative the Project GREEN - CC : " Graded Membranes for Energy Efficient New Generation Carbon Capture Process " dedicates its research on supported thin film ceramic gas separation membranes with complex support microstructure . The aim of the four-year research work is to increase the separation efficiency significantly through the use of extremely thin membrane layers on top of a porous support and the use of catalysts for accelerating surface exchange reactions. Our Institute is part of the research network on oxygen transport modeling of supported thin film membranes. In addition, the stability and performance of oxygen transport membranes is tested in a laboratory scale with model gases containing flue gas components such as CO2 and SO2.

Neues Helmholtz-Institut gegründet
Das Institut für Physikalische Chemie ist einer der Gründungspartner im neu gegründeten Helmholtz-Institut HI MS, in dem Forscher der RWTH Aachen University, des Forschungszentrum Jülich und der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster an innovativen Ansätzen für neue Energiespeichersysteme arbeiten, die als wesentliche Voraussetzung für neue Energiestrategien in Deutschland angesehen werden.

Prof. Dr. Manfred Martin has been appointed as Adjunct Professor of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, Korea. Hereby, the fruitful cooperation within the recently discontinues World Class University programme should be succeeded with the Department of Materials Science. Prof. Martin has been appointed as one of thirteen german principal scientists to full time professor at the Asian highly recognized university.
