Ceramic Functional Materials and Composites for Sustainable Energy Applications

Mixed conducting metal oxides "MIEC" are able to sustain migration of both ionic and electronic charge carriers. These materials are key components in various high-temperature functional devices, among which are solid oxide fuel cells "SOFC", steam electrolysis cells "SOEC", gas permeation membranes, and rechargeable oxide batteries – ROB.

Our research goals

  • determine transport parameters of MIEC oxides that are essential to describing the charge carrier migration in mixed conductingoxides under model conditions and near-operation conditions.
  • eludicate structure-prooperty relationships of MIEC materials
  • predict transport properties of devices containing MIEC materials
  • identify and characterize degradation phenomena that occur during long-term operation of mixed-conducting devices and materials

Methods

  • Gas permeation, Massenspektrometrie / Gaschromatografie
  • DC conductivity
  • Impedance spectrometry
  • Multiphysics FE simulations
  • Defect chemical modelling
  • Material characterization by means of SEM/EDS and X-ray diffractometry
