The event was opened by Dr. Gunther Voswinckel, the Chairman of proRWTH. After the welcome address, RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg gave a speech entitled "Academic and Executive - a Contradiction?"

At the event, this year's excellent doctoral graduates were presented with the Borchers Medal, in recognition of their outstanding achievement: The Borchers Medal is awarded to doctoral candidates of RWTH Aachen who have passed their final examination "with distinction". This year, 125 doctoral graduates received the award.

Professor Dr. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Wilhelm Borchers was full professor of metallurgy at our University between 1897 and 1925. In the years 1904 -1909 he presided over the University as its Rector.
